SO-if it is a sticky solenoid, is there a cure, or do I have to take it back
to the rebuilder to get it fixed?

  I've had the same thing happen with a ba starter switch. I'd first try a
remote starter as you also surmised (or the easy one wire home made equivalent
as David suggests)
