I doubt if those are
'mil-spec', despite what anybody says. They serve the purpose they needed
them for so they got them from wherever, maybe the Army motorpool
headquarters ordered 100 of them, but I doubt they're gonna be 24 volt with
blackout lights and all that.
  Dennis
Dennis and all,
2 more points of information:
1) in re non-spec vehicles, if you ever get a chance, go to Coronado beach near the Hotel Del Coronado and watch the guys going through BUDS. As they learn how to work in the surf, their instructors ramble around in some seriously jacked up Ford F350 crew cabs on monster tires. I had the good fortune to be able to roam around the base there over the years and there are a number of, er, modified civilian vehicles there. There are plenty of ways to make non-standard purchases or acquisitions. :-) My own government service was for an agency which was spectacularly successful at obtaining or making whatever fit the job, but we were a fortunate one. I know it's harder in other military areas, but it does happen.
2) which is not to say that there aren't some very clear-cut, 'standard' mil packages, of course. <http://www.govliquidation.com/list/c7587> will list for you Trucks and Truck Tractors currently for sale by DOD resources. Still CUCV's and their variants showing up, plenty of GM 6.2 box and step vans, even a non-destroyed real jeep a few months ago. Hundreds of 6x6's, too. BUT, a goodly number of not-CUCV light trucks, from Ford crew cabs to Dodge and Jeep pickups to small GM and Ford compact pickups.
FWIW,
Joel
resting from a 5-day, 3500 mile haul, including a 22-hour non-stop to finish it up this morning
