I have nothing to add on what is used on military vehicles in particular,
but I do recall that about 15 years ago, there was considerable publicity
given to the fact that the government was going to start buying civilian
spec vehicles for non-tactical uses, meaning Navistar could bid on
contracts with standard S-Series trucks where only specialized trucks
from AM General were purchased before.

And, yes, they had purchased relatively standard Scouts and pickups--a
lot of C120 crew cabs for instance--during the 60s and early 70s, but
they seemed to move away from that in the late 70s and 80s, then back
again.
