Can you send a picture of that Stant and a part number.  The ones I've seen
don't come anywhere close to blocking the bypass.

The Stants do work. I am running one in my 1210 345 Travelett now with no
problems. The RS is definitely better for heavy duty applications. The
protrusion on the Stant does block the bypass almost completely,
unfortunately it's blocked even during warm up.

Define 'basket'. If you're referring to the stamped legs that form a
'teepee', that goes up(pointing toward the water neck). No proper(read
RobertShaw) IH thermostat has a 'plate', rather it's a 'cup'. *Don't*
install a Stant or other brand, they don't block the bypass when open. Look
down into the t-stat housing block....see that cast-in feature in the middle
with the machined counterbore? That's what needs to be closed off when the
t-stat is open. The cup on a RobertShaw moves downward into the counterbore.
Toss one in a pan of boiling water and you'll see how it works. It's always
a good idea to check a new t-stat anyway to make sure it's opening at the
right temp(grab the candy thermometer).

Hello Steve,

I spent some intimate time down in the barn with a Stant and a Robert Shaw
thermostat today <G>. I placed both of them in a 345 by-pass and studied the
situation closely and what I found was this. Yes the Stant lacks the valve
to cut off the water flow through the bypass, however the design of the
Stant has a protrusion that permanently and almost completely blocks the
bypass so we don't have much of a problem here. The RS thermostat has holes
in the blocking valve so it appears to me that the bypass flow when hot will
be about equivalent between both thermostats or possibly even lower with the
Stant.

What I did find is that when fully open the RS thermostat appears that it
will allow a much higher and unrestricted flow to the radiator. I had run
Stant thermostats in my 345 for many years with out problems with the
exception of it running a little hot when trailering. This was before I
found out about the RS thermostats.

If the RS thermostats are no longer available I think I will just use a
Stant and drill about 4 1/4" holes through the plate around the opening.
Unless you live in a colder region where fast warm ups are an issue this
should work fine.
