Also, there won't be any flow through this passage unless the heat riser
works on a stock exhaust or unless you hold your hand over one exhaust in a
header system.

see how hot the intake manifold gets in the area of the crossover, under the
bi metal choke. Those crossovers can easily get coked up with carbon, all
but
closing them down (I've seen them completely closed off) so you don't get
proper choke action or carburetor heat to help vaporize the fuel for a
better
burn. Normally, a good open one will burn off standard engine enamel. Be
careful, it may be way hot, but if it's not, you have an intake to pull....
