Great...  might mean no 5/8" bolts for me then....

The original u-bolts are back in, but I won't drive it regularly like that.
It was just to move it a little bit so it'd be out of the way and not draw
too much ire....

Any time I've tried such a "shortcut" on anything in the scout, it's ended
up failing sooner than it would have if done right.  I no longer will try
stuff like that, especially when it involves suspension components.  I do
not intend to roll this scout because of u-bolt failure on the interstate.
I drive way too many interstate miles with my scout to be willing to make
any compromises as far as suspension is concerned.   I might see if the
ubolts can be persuaded with a clamp to come close enough together, but I
will *not* drive regularly as it sits now.  I also won't grind on the axle.
If this means finding replacement plates and bolts, I guess that's what I'll
have to do.
