[ihc] Re: Parking brake cable lubing, Robertshaw stats....

Figured in the interest of brevity I'd cover two subjects with one post. The
speedometer cable lubers are available at most any parts store. I got one a
few years ago at NAPA for our 86 GMC van with a noisy speedo cable. The lubers
are somewhat vehicle specific- they don't all have the same threads on the
speedo end apparently. The instructions with the one I got said to unhook both
ends of the speedo cable, and put the fitting on the speedometer end. It has a
grease zerk in it. Gear lube was the weapon of choice, and according to the
instructions (which I have since of course lost), you didn't have to remove
the inner drive cable. It was still messy and all but impossible to get the
stuff through the cable with the center still in it. And, when I was done, the
thing still made noise and jumped, which I later found was due to a frayed
spot on the drive cable. Replacement solved the problem, and the new one is
probably lubed for the life of the truck now.
On the Robertshaw 'stats, TRE hasn't been smoking anything. I found the same
info he did, and posted it on the Binder Bulletin a couple months back when
there was a big thread going about Robertshaw thermostats. Apparently like so
many other companies, Robertshaw either sold off their automotive aftermarket
businesses, or was bought out themselves and the 'raiders' divested themselves
of the (probably) less profitable automotive stuff. But Robertshaw is
apparently the premium line for Stant now.
