Mitch-

Do not assume that either of the new gold boxes are any good. They are both
defective. Keep after the parts store until they give you the correct part
in good condition. Your instincts here are correct, and your confusion is
only because you don't believe the evidence of your own eyes.

The description you give at the store is:

"The old one is intermittent. This one doesn't work at all. I put the old
one back and it runs for a few hours and dies."

New parts are supposed to work better than old ones, period.
