Re: [ihc] Passed... Almost with Flying Colors

---Once she fired up, she ran like normal. Drove her the final 7 miles home
and she didn't even do what she normally does... die just as the front
wheels are about to hit the driveway. Yeah, she acts like most kids do, once
we get home, she acts like she is sleeping. She also didn't suck gas down,
but there was a noticeable change in the needle/gauge when we had problems
starting her. I am not going to say that this is the module, so I will check
some coils I have, test the one on her and attempt the points dizzy. I am
going to go through the manual and perform what tests I can... hope I have
all the needed meters and such, so if I don't I will be jumping into the
world of the IH points dizzy.
IH Point's distys are actually very simple and easy to work on, all I'll run in the trucks actually. First off set your point gap to .017 with the disty out using a feeler gauge. I don't know the dwell specs off the top of my head, but all dwell actually is, is anoter way to check the point gap, and that is how you adjust dwell. To be perfectly honest, I generally will set a new set of points with the feeler gauge, providing it's handy, but my ear is the #1 tool I use to make sure everything is set right. Another thing, if the points on the disty you are going to put in are worn, now's a good time to replace them, as point gap is much easier to set with the disty out of the truck. I'm assuming that you know you check gap with the cam on the disty fully opening the points. Also, make sure that you add a balast resistor or you will burn up your points very quickly. Also add the "hot start lead" from the starter directly to the coil that bypasses the balast to assist in starting. Other than that it's real easy to drop in the points disty, if you have any more Q's, feel free to ask.
