The pin is the same as used in ford pickups, which also used a BW 4 speed in
the early 70s.

The pin is the sacrificial part here, softer than the rest, for the reasons
you suspect. I wouldn't worry about it, but I would start looking for the
pin. The drill bit will probably last 20 years, but the wear will then be in
the shift lever and in the top cover. I have one that's broken on the top
cover because somebody used a drill bit and then tried to force the
transmission when it was cold. Probably a fluke, but I'd still rather have a
broken pin.
