both of my 1972 TravelAlls have 392 IC engines. the 1010 has a 4-barrel
Holley 4150 double pumper, the 1110 4x4 has an analogue Holley Pro-Jection
2-barrel TBI. the 1010 is fully 100% stock from top to bottom throughout
the engine, including all smog/emissions equipment present and in working
order. the 1110 has an aftermarket cam (which doesn't have a good powerband
for an SV engine) and Crane XR3000 FireBall electronic ignition, though it
too retains all original emissions equipment in working order. in both
cases, the engines retain identical original air cleaner housings, which use
10"x2.5" filter elements, and they seem to breathe just fine.

with the stock setup, when it ran the 1010 breathed well enough to roast the
31" tires exceedingly well on any kind of pavement with its 3.73 gears and
727 tranny, even when i made a concerted effort NOT to spin the wheels. the
1110, on the other hand, doesn't have enough low-end power with its 4.10
gears and 727 to spin the 33" tires in anything but soft sand or loose
gravel. at pretty much any speed or RPM, the 1010 had excellent throttle
response and never seemed to lack for air. for contrast, the 1110 doesn't
really start to respond to the throttle untill above 2100rpm, at which point
it can be quite crisp, and does not seem to have any air problems either.

and finally, our 1970 Scout 800A also has a 392 IC. this one has had *all*
the emissions stuff removed, the A.I.R. holes in the heads plugged with the
correct bolts from IHC, has a Carter ThermoQuad 4-barrel in relatively good
tune, and is otherwise unmodified. this engine sports the original air
cleaner housing identical to that of the two TravelAlls, using the same
10"x2.5" filter element. with a T18 transmission and 3.73 gears, this one
won't spin its 31" tires anywhere near as well as the 1010 used to do.

as a last note, in case anyone is interested, when it was my daily driver,
the 1010 got 14mpg city and 16mpg highway. the 800A gets 12mpg pretty much
everywhere, no matter what. the 1110 gets roughly 6mpg city and 7mpg
highway, regardless of what attempts i make to tune it better. our old 1968
Scout 800 with 152 and 4.27 gears, before we traded it in, got 19mpg city
(we never took it on the highway).
