Re: Steering wheel keyed to column shaft
Allan and Hofs-
When I went to put a later model Scout II rally wheel on my 74 Scout II, I
found that the steering column splines were keyed so the wheel only fit one
way. And since the way it wanted to fit wasn't the way I wanted it to fit (the
orientation was totally wrong for the turn signal cancelling cam, as well as
looks) I had to 'modify' the wheel with a file so that I had a 'flat' in the
proper space to match what I had on the column. HOWEVER; when I put a J%%p
rally wheel from an early 80's Wagoneer (1/8 the price of the Scout version,
thank you very much) on my 73 Scout II, it slipped right on in the correct
position with no hassles. That one didn't appear to have the 'keying' like the
74 had, and as far as I could tell, was the original column. So I guess the
answer is a solid 'maybe'?

not sure about early 70 Scouts, but I'd guess they are like mine.
