Leo,
  I seem to have a slight memory of removing one of those splash shields
on the first 392 I blew up, or on one of the many motors I killed in
that stretch. I believe it isn't that critical to overall operation of
the vehicle, but;I'm sure it wouldn't hurt the operation as it would
keep the oil on the rockers rather than spraying on the inside of the
valve cover.
