Travelall - it lives
Last night I put the new exhaust manifold on and bolted up the exhaust (I
broke the exhaust pipe "clamp" area before). Tonight I used the Right
Stuff on the valve cover (Hint: looks like a can of whipped cream),
bolted it down, flushed the sunflower seeds from the lower rad hose, and
installed the thermostat housing, again, with The Right Stuff, but
without a thermostat.
I then filled with water and started it.. and listened to the
(relatively) quiet exhaust. When the fuel pump stopped pumping old gas
from the front (and only) tank, I hooked the fuel pump to a new filter
and to the carb, stopped my siphon-feed, poured a few gallons into the
'tank, and then drove to the gas station - I moved my Travelall for the
first time.
Made it to the gas station with coolant boiling out (of sorts). There's
a coolant fitting on the intake manifold (345-2bbl) that I don't know
where to attach.. so it was letting steam out.
I put over 13 gallons into the front tank, and probably a gallon or two
from the gas can, so ~ 15 gallon capacity. The fuel gauge doesn't work
tho'. Nor does the speedometer.
Fun, huh?
I put gas in it, then drove home. (3 or 4 blocks). The tranny
(supposedly fresh 727) didn't seem to find it's gears like I want it to,
but the kick-down linkage is currently disconnected.
At WOT, the 392 bogs a little.. probably thanks to the 345 intake and the
Holley 2210 carb! I have a 2300 in the garage I should probably swap on..
For not having moved under it's own power in 5 years, it moved pretty
well. Brakes seemed to work pretty well after I re-attached the booster
line while at the gas station.
I still need to replace one very shot spring bushing and bolt (bolt is
half-out!).. I *think* I could feel it while driving. Plus U-joint
grease and other stuff like that.. and a well deserved oil change.
I haven't looked at the rear window setup (propped up by a 2x4 right now)
to see what I need to do to make it work.. but I also need to get my dash
lights back on-line.. driving at night with DARKNESS in front of you is a
little spooky.
But.. it's certainly a start. It moved farther than my racer did. ;-)
Anyone have a clue where the coolant fitting, to the passenger rear of
the intake, goes to?
PVC valve still doesn't fit right.. no idea what to do on that count yet.
