Heather & Bryan,
   I would first start by unhooking and cleaning all the wires that pass
through the firewall. This is usually where most of the problems occur.
   The backfiring could be caused by a to rich of a fuel mix in the
carb. Also, a tune-up would help. (new plugs, wire, cap, rotor, ect)
