Top Starter Bolt

Thanks to all that have given me advice on the top starter bolt
problem. I have received several replies that were very helpful and
informative from people that have Scouts and 4X4's. Does anyone with a
100 series 2WD T'all, WM, or possibly PU have some input on this? I am
very grateful for those of you that have taken the time to reply, but I
have changed them on two Scouts and two 4X4 travelalls without any
problem whatsoever. The set-up on this thing is completely alien to
those. As I was complaining when I was changing my selenoid (BTW, is it
selenoid or selonoid or solonoid?), there is a more minimal amount of
workspace in here than I have ever seen. I think I had finally jacked
it up high enough that I could have yanked the starter out, but found
that the bottom bolt had loosened and this was just enough to keep the
starter from engaging the gears. However, I felt up around the
thing-could literally BARELY touch the edge of the top bolt hole with
one finger-my left index by jamming, cramming, bending it around. I
tried to come in from the side over the frame-exhaust manifold is
blocking it! NO way to get at it from the underside. Whoever replaced
this starter or put it on originally agreed with me-as there was no top
bolt in it either! I tightened the bottom bolt and it works. I have,
for the moment, left it like this. If noone can tell me some better
way, I will take off the exhaust so that I can get to it.

Have any of you ever done this on a '74 100 series 2WD, w/392, AT, AC,
dual exhaust-in case any of these details matter. I honestly wish I
lived closer to Landry at this point so I could head up and have him
show me how to do it!!!

Sorry for the repeated question, but just want to find out if I am
missing some simple step, or if it really needs the exhaust loosened.

Thanks!

Michael
