Tom-

I am so proud!!! This is the first time on the digest that I have been
accused of understanding anything! Of course, you probably actualy
understand it ten times better than me, but I appreciate the effort.
And don't claim to understand less than me to Landry, or he will get
discouraged and give up on you right away!!!! He certainly had to talk
me through all of this about five times before I got it right, and I
still think it was dumb luck. Your assumption about the compression
stroke is right-just John L.'s is more precise. When you stop feeling
the air come out, you should be right at TDC-however, feeling those last
few micromovements of air forced out with our ill-adapted human sensory
receptors (unless you are physically maintained by a chiropractor, of
course!) is an inexact science. With John's way, you can turn it to
feel air coming out, then use your eyes and watch the mark, allowing you
to turn it quicker. When you get the timing mark lined up at TDC, or
"0" on the mark, then you set the rotor on the distributor so that the
cap slides on with the #8 plug wire directly above the rotor. Check
your firing order on the block or in the manual, and then spray a little
starter fluid in and see what happens.
If you want to ask over the phone, feel free to call me at (510)
864-9717, or (510) 435-6457, and I'll talk to you while you're doing
it. I know you won't need the help, but once you realize how dumb I am
and I finally got it right, you will feel much better about your
prospects!!!

Good luck!

Michael
