Travelall - it coughed!
Came home, put the carb on, hooked up the linkages, put spark plug wires
on, distributor cap..
Fuel line to the carb. The fuel pump has a threaded fitting, so instead
I just ran a hose to small gas can sitting on the roof. After I started
the siphon, I made a huge gas mess everywhere that I had to wait out.. d'oh.
Tried it with jumper cables, but ended up throwing a spare battery into
the Travelall.
Sprayed some starter fluid into the carb, cranked it over.. nothing.
Nothing nothing nothing. Moved the spark plug wires around one spot.
Nothing. Moved the other way once. Nothing. Changed coils. Nothing.
Moved again, nothing.
Then, with the wires in what I believed to be the "correct" spot (#1
pointing at the vertical water pipe from the water pump, right?), I
cranked.. and then punched the throttle (Oops, needs a return spring
still). It burped!
Again.. puff puff and some smoke coming out of the intake, and from the
vacuum fitting at the rear of the tappet cover. This is disconnected.
One hose came on my 2bbl intake, but the fitting for the tappet cover was
wrong, while the fitting that came with the 392 had the right fitting,
but the hose is junk.
Moved the plug wires again.. got a puff puff and then flames out of the
carb.. OK, *NOW* it's on wrong.. put it back to where it should be.
Played some more with it and had lots of smoke from the intake, and a few
loud PUFFS came from the driver's side glasspack'd exhaust, and I heard
stuff rattling.. maybe carbon, or maybe sun flower seeds. ;-)
I eventually gave up for the night.. but it was trying, anyhow.
So.. the hose that runs from the rear of the "carb base" (though it's
actually on the intake) to the tappet cover is where manifold vacuum is
"souced" to the carb? Or is it something else? Would it explain my Puff
Puff Puff but no run? I used a carb base gasket from a Ford that matched
closely.. had a *small* hole where the vacuum from the hose I'm missing
would come into the intake and up to the carb, so that seems OK. I did
plug off the intake manifold/carb side of this hose.
All of the other vacuum hoses I *believe* are routed or plugged. A LARGE
fitting on the passenger rear of the intake is not capped.. but I think
it might be a water hose or some such.
Are my assumptions about the "hose" from the intake to the tappet
correct? Would that be a good enough reason for the motor to Puff but
not run?
The hose on the manifold had a round cylinder body, but then a "nipple"
on the end. The hose that was with the motor is just a cylinder. I
couldn't get the "nipple" hose to go into the hole.
What's this particular part called n' what are these variations? I'll
look through my shop manual shortly.
Oh well, it almost ran..
