Pinging

David,
Yes, advancing the timing will affect the pinging. It will make it
much worse. Pre-ignition or pinging is more of a problem at low
elevations than at higher elevations. The higher octane will help. I
use nothing but premium in my 345, and still can get some ping. My MSD
adjustable timing device in my Terra lets me run at 0 degrees at sea
level and at somewhere between 6 and 10 degrees advanced timing at my
home altitude of 2200 feet.

like the factory says (for late model smogged Scouts). It makes
       an amazing
       difference in mine.

Will higher octane and the above adjustment help the pinging
with a 345/thermo quad, under heavy tow loads. In 4 wheel
drive I had pinging occuring at 50 -55 mph , could not keep
speed up on hills e.g. 60. This was done at sea level with a
3000# load, It also took a long time to get up to 55. Any
suggestions? Did not have the smog pump hooked up.
