Vacuum advance

Ok, I've checked a few more things out and think I am
much closer to the solution.
This afternoon I pulled all the plugs and had my
gracious wife stick her finger in the #8 spark plug
hole while I turned the front crankshaft bolt.
Verified that the dist. was indeed pointing where is
should (went ahead and did a comp. check and
everything looks surprisingly well in that camp).
Anyway...I then took the vacuum advance module off
the distributor...low and behold it was full of what
smelled like gas, along with lots of little bits of
black stuff. By this time all the parts stores were
closed so I just put everything back together.
A few questions...1) The plate that the arm from the
vacuum advance connects to seems to have a LOT of
movement potential, yet the arm on the vacuum advance
will only move about 1/4-1/2"...normal?
    2) I unplugged the vacuum hose to the module and
then revved (sp?) the engine, it sounds no different
than when the hose is attached. I guess it's much more
likely to be a problem with the vacuum advance than
with the dist. itself? Othe than buying a new advance
mechanism and trying again, is there a way to test
which is the real problem?
     3) Am I forgetting anything obvious here?
Really appreciate the forum guys! I am sure it gets
tiring answering goofy questions from newbies, but I
promise to buy you all a beer or two at the first
event I am able to attend.
Thanks,
Russ
