RE: Towing questions - again
Roy asked:
I know this has been discussed extensively before, but of course I wasn't
planning to tow a Scout then so I didn't really pay attention.
I'm thinking about trailering a '65 Scout 80 4x4 to Utah in a couple of
weeks. I'd like to use my '96 F250 Extended Cab as the tow vehicle. UHaul
says the heaviest weight I can tow with that vehicle is 3650 lb. Does anyone
know what a Scout 80 weighs? I guess I could go to a recycling yard and pay
them a few buck to weigh it but it would be easier if someone already had
that information.
I know I have the option of using a tow dolly but I'd prefer to have all 4
wheels off the ground just to be safe. I don't want to get to Utah and have
burned out rear axle bearings to deal with.

Roy,
I'm confused. Did Uhaul tell you that 3650 is the most that your Ford can tow,
or the most that they will allow you to put on their rental flatbed? Surely
a 3/4 ton truck can tow MORE than 3650 pounds. I don't know how your model
80 is equipped, but I figure mine to weigh in right around 3600 pounds. Mine
has no hard top and no windows (but it does have a rollbar and a back seat so
that may equal out). I flat towed mine from San Diego to Yuma, Arizona (about
185 miles) last year behind an Explorer. (My Explorer has the factory tow
package AND a class 3 hitch). The tow included a grade from sea level up to
4200 feet and back down. I removed the rear drive shaft prior to the tow. It
was very uneventful and I would do it again if I had to.
Good Luck,
John Townley
