How many moving parts would there be in such a configuration?  A small 
percentage of that in the 345/T19 combo.  Materials and manufacturing 
tolerences would prevent much home wrenching, and currently make it 
phenomanally expensive, but conceptually it is much simpler.  No 
reciprocation, all rotation!(sounds like a good t-shirt for turbine geeks)
Regarding battery technology, much of the upcoming breakthroughs appear to be 
coming by research with capacitors.
