Jim,
   That is caused by the seals getting hard. It takes a few minutes for
them to soften up. Go to the store and find a can of Burk-Bile 2+2 carb
cleaner and empty the can down the dipstick tube. This should help for a
while. Your eventually need to get the tranny rebuilt, but the 2+2
should last you a couple 10 thousand miles.
