Looking for input...

Hi guys and gals, 
I piped in the other day saying that I am now in the
market for a Scout. Well I have been looking...
  I found an '80 with the 4-196 and a 4 speed but have
a few questions...I owned a '75 with the 304 about ten
years back and loved it, looking at the 196's gas
mileage is probably much easier to live with but I'm
wondering about power...is there enough?
  This will be used as a daily driver and weekend "get
us to the campsite over the rocks" vehicle.
  Any advice? How much can the 196 be modified? Parts
availability? Limits on tire/suspension mods with the
196?
