Mike, I have no idea if the wiring on a 74 WM is at like my 73 Scout II, but 
I had the same problem you describe. I was directed to the heavy pale blue 
wires that go from the alternator through the bulkhead connector. Sure 
enough, opening the bulkhead connector showed some funkyness in the contacts. 
I soldered in jumpers for just the two funky (the heavy guage) wires, and 
have had no problem in 5 years.
