Ken,
   Chances of squishing the cable are slim because of the way they are
run. You could be losing the cable soon. You could have mud and gunk
built up around the shift levers. The shifter inside is a detent lever
rides on a steel ball with a spring behind it. Maybe it is time for a
fluid change.
