msd
I have run my scout with and without msd, with an otherwise excellent
ignition system in propper tune and i did see differences in milage
althouhg slight 1-1.5 mpg also i can lug the engine down to very low rpms
without stalling, I have run my ignition with points, prestolite and msd
with each. I like the setup i run now best msd and prestolite (rebuilt
dist with NEW electronics purchased seperatly, rebuilt prestolites from
most places reuse the 20 some year old electronics if it works on the
bench, it then fails sonn after you buy it or at least it did for me the
new internals i got appeared to be better built than original. I can run a
bigger gap with the msd than without it, starts better than witout it(yes i
gap the plugs to spec when i disconect the msd) it also trigers the tach
function on my holley tbi and works good with my adjustable timing advance.
I see it as a well spent $120. when i got it it was cheaper to buy it and
use an old points distributer than to get my prestolite bact functioning.
I have put many miles on this scout(enough to pay for msd in fuel a few
times over) both on and off road and no it is not necessary to have an msd
to run right but for me it runs better. I have made other modifications
wich led to better milage or performance, switching from tqaud to predator
killed millage but helped performance for wide open throttle running,
swittching to projection was a big $ investment that helped dramatically in
milage and performance, going closed loop on projection helped milage. and
the list goes on. I would do more fuel milage calculations for everyone
but right now my speedo no longer works. anyhow that all i got to say
about ignitions.
