I think the tach for Diesel is machanical, almost like a distributor on a gas motor.  It spins off the cam, I think.  Eldon M. knows this for sure, He's the (not so) local guru on diesels.  There is nothing electrical to sense engine speed, unless you add somethin to the flywheel or harmonic balancer
