Really?  I have a big long Radio Shack whip.. and it's just a big steel
"rod" that slides into the "base" part with a set screw.  I can tune the
SWR by moving the antenna up and down a little and/or trimming the
bottom of the "wire/rod"

All of my antennas are like this!
