Joel,
You shouldn't get any slipping off the line, that baby should lock up and take off with as much umph as it can muster carrying around that heavy load, its own weight.
You say you rebuilt a few of these now, or at least the truck eats them.  Have you replced the torque converter?  I wonder if that could be your culprit.
