What about testing the air/fuel mixture of your carb during different
situations (climbing a hill, or under a load), cold start, normal,
deacceleration, etc?

Finding a good mechanic to check that out for you is a little tough - and
not too many seem to know carbs these days. But still...

Good luck on doggedly tracking the problem down - I was in a similar
situation with a diesel mercedes. I finally discovered that it was simply
poor compression (which I suspect was caused by Slick 50). Of course,
starting a diesel with poor compression on a very cold day is far from fun,
and I had to get rid of it. But I probably never would have found the cause
of the starting problem without systematically tracking down every
possibility. BTW, none of my IHs have what would be considered very good
compression, but they still run like champs!

Oh, and even better than a compression test would be an oil leakdown test.
