Michael,

If warming it up makes it run better, work on the carb.  It may never run
better than crappy when cold.  That is a feature of a '70s carburetor.
Basically they had to run them leaner than is practically possible with a
carb.  In the old days, you just ran them rich until they warmed up.

I'd do the compression check, but I'll bet that's not the problem.
