That 5000# is probably only for when an equalizer hitch is used. IH
limited the Scout to about 3000#/300# tongue load without an equalizer
and I'd say the same would apply to the Ranger, although the 99 Ranger
sales brochure doesn't show a limitation, only the max. weights allowed.
Probably the biggest limitation would be the lack of brakes on your
trailer unless it's got surge brakes. You could haul 5000# down the
road, but could you stop it? Without brakes, 3000# is probably more than
I'd feel real comfortable with on the highway. And I concur 100% with
the comments about the tongue load. I'd take a scales along to check
that you get enough on the tongue.
