As far as gas mileage goes, you'll never notice the difference.  Yes, 
less weight is better but it isn't going to be enough of a difference to 
matter.

BTW if you're going to offroad, steel absorbs "abuse" generally better 
than aluminum.  Steel can also be fixed with a hammer if you bend it a 
bit.
