When you say "went" Jeff... what exactly happened?

Bearings?  Maybe yes.  Seal?  I don't think the weight of the fan makes a
bit of difference there.  I disassembled a pump yesterday, and the seal is
situated in such a manner that it doesn't carry any sort of load.  The seal
is going to be more affected by heat and contamination (from particles in
the coolant).

Most definitely.  However, a thermostatically controlled fan clutch helps
too.  Remember, the electricity to run a fan comes from the alternator.
The more electricity the alternator has to put out means more drag on the
engine and more fuel be consumed to turn it.  There's no free lunch is
there?  Dang! <grin>
