Doug,

For me it's the satisfaction of actually doing the work... it's a hobby.
Then, there's knowing it's done just the way I want it.

You also need to realize the Mike's cost of near $2000.00 for his big DIY
project included a lot of "premium" parts and services that I'd be willing
to bet don't come with a standard rebuild you were quoted at Ewing.  I
don't expect my rebuild to cost nearly that much only because I'm on a
tight budget and I'm willing to forgo some of the more expensive items like
a performance cam and high tech pistons.

Just something to consider.
