Rik,
Rig up a gas feed and yank the fuel pump out.  See if the noise changes.
If it makes a difference, try a different pump & inspect the cam lobe.

When I connected my old Sun Super Tach II, I had to wire it to the - side of
the coil.  Seemed backwards to me, but it works great.
