Neutral safety switch

John,

I had the same problem on my '78 with 727. I am assuming you have
the auto tranny - the reason for the switch. It can be found if you
crawl under the truck and look at the left side near the top if memory
serves me correctly. It should be relatively easy to find as there are
two or three wires coming off of it. It is a threaded plug with a nut
on it. WARNING!!!! BEFORE removing, make sure you have a bucket under
the plug and some extra ATF fluid. When you pull the plug, about 3 or 4
quarts will come out. The plug should be available at any reputable
parts store since the tranny is so common. It is an easy fix and only
takes about 20 min. Good time to pull the pan and replace that tranny
filter at the same time. If you son is wheelin' in any amount of mud,
water will ingress and wreak havoc on the tranny. This comes
unfortunately from experience and a new tranny. It would be wise to
flush it out after every mud run - it is easy and quick and although the
gasket is a bit of a pain, it is small insurance to pay against a new
tranny. YMMV - good luck hope this helps.
