Re: Tom's V8

Tom, Steve, other gas sippers:

You all have sure done better than my 304 Terra. I tracked gas mileage for
the last 50,000 miles on a per tankfull basis. Average since 1983 (total
miles driven divided by total fuel purchased) has been 11.5 MPG. Usual
mileage was about 11 MPG. The lowest was 9 MPG (I believe) and the best was
12 MPG. Even towing the infamous four horse trailer netted me better than
10 MPG - Go figure!

Of course, then I rebuilt the carb last December due to emissions
considerations. Found wrong gasket from previous rebuild (DPO?) that
allowed a very small vacuum leak between carb base and main body. Haven't
filled the tanks much since, but between that rebuild and the trip to
Monroe for NWBR this year, the damn thing appears to be getting 14 MPG!
(It's hard to tell when you have a 50 gallon tank in your bed and you
sometimes use the leaking, 19 gallon stock tank, and sometimes don't).
