Re: rear driveshaft/axle leak

(http://www.krusty-motorsports.com/scout). It seems that my rear axle sits
about 1"- 1 1/2" too far back in the wheel well. I'm wondering if the rear
axle has slipped back and that's part of the cause of the leak. I know
that
sounds really far-fetched, but I am on planning on putting 31x10.50s on
soon, and would like to have them centered in the wheel well (otherwise, I
think they would rub constantly).<

Bryan,
My '67 800 has the same problem with axle set back. I've been told
that's the way they were built. My front axle is centered, but the back
isn't. I measured the wheelbase and it's right on. Strange, huh? I've
seen some 800's that looked more centered and others the same as yours and
mine. As I recall, the wheelbase should be exactly 100". You might check
yours.

Your oil leak is most likely the pinion seal. Relatively easy and
inexpensive to fix. Biggest problem in the fix is loosening the large nut
holding the yoke. That nut usually requires an impact wrench to loosen.

The rear end uses special oil sold in quarts at all auto supply stores.
If you've got a limited slip differential, get the oil with limited slip
additive. With that leak, you'll want to make sure your differential
doesn't run out of lubrication . . . . . .that could lead to some
expensive repairs.
