The reason for the bypass in the cooling system is to insure full flow 
through the engine under all conditions, even when the thermostat is 
closed.  This prevents hotspots when the t'stat is closed.  But, you've 
got to close the bypass when you want full cooling as you stated.

Where can I get the Robertshaw type thermostat??  Part Numbers??
