Dan, you are right, but the real early Scout 80's had the Dana 18 T-case, which is offset from the output shaft from the tranny.  To compensate for this offset, the rear axle pumpkin on a Dana 27 was slid toward the passenger side, making the driver's axle shaft longer than the passenger side.
