Glue removal, Steering, Clutch fan
IH All,
A couple of topics:
Glue removal:
Recently there was a post requesting information about decal glue removal.
When I stripped the decals off my Scout, I used a heat gun to get the paper
off. Then, I used a 3M product to remove the glue. Now, the operation was
not a simple spray on and wipe off as I hoped. Instead I had to spray the
product on, let it sit a couple of seconds until it got gooey (sp?), and
then scrape it off with a razor blade. Just be careful not to gouge the
paint with the blade or you get rewarded with more body work! Seems like it
took about 2 hours a side.
Loose steering:
Since I bought my Scout, the steering had been quite loose. I could not get
it adjusted tighter due to the fact that someone had stripped the threads
in the top cover. In addition, there was a continous leak from under the
adjustment nut. While at the Southern Scouts meeting in Charlotte, I met
quite a few people. Mark Prescott introduced me to Eason Lilley, one of the
club members, who had an old non-working steering unit in his shop. Eason
agreed to remove the top off the pump and send it to me for a few $$. Well,
in removing the top, he inadvertently broke one of the corners off. So, he
gave me a call, and arrranged to meet me in my home town during his travels
to get me a complete working pump! To make this long story shorter, I got a
very tight steering unit for a much better price that I would have gottten
form any of the vendors. Now my Scout is tight with almost no play at all!
Another testiment to the caliber of folks that drive IH and participate on
the digest!!!
Clutch Fan:
Last weekend I installed a new clutch fan. It was a 4 bolt, purchased at
the local Car Quest. Since the install, the max temp has dropped and she
now runs cooler. Question; when I pulled the old clutch fan off, I noticed
that there was a lot of crud covering the spring on the front of the unit.
Could this crud have prevented the spring from functioning properly?
Now it's time to get those spring bushings installed!
Have a great weekend!
Yank
PS: I'm jealous of all you folks that got to attend the nationals! I WILL
BE THERE NEXT YEAR!
