Alternator News

Just read an article in Wards Automotive News on Technology Trends.
Among the things they said were coming:

2000--at least two German vehicles will have new Delphi Automotive water
cooled alternators that can put out 50 % more amps at idle than
conventional alternators. The considerable heat the alternator puts out
will help warm the engine (and the cabin) faster on cold days (the effect
with a 600# V-392 to heat up would probably not be noticible!)

2003 is the production target for their Energen system, which will have a
computer- controlled combined starter/alternator powering many vehicle
systems with electric motors rather than belts and hydraulics and will
also include new high-energy batteries. Probably this system will lead
to engines that shut down and restart rather than idle to reduce
emissions.

By 2010, they are predicting many vehicles will electrical systems
operating on 36 to 42 volts.

It's going to take some major changes to make our Scouts keep up with
technology!
