Clutch adjustment would be an easy explanation, but if that's it, you
should also grind between 1st and 2nd and particularly from N to 1st.
This makes me suspect the synchronizer if it just does it on 2 to 3.
That transmission isn't that hard to tear down if you want to fix it, or
you can teach your son to double clutch so he can be a REAL TRUCK DRIVER!
