JohnL's trusty steed.
John,
That's the IH bug returning the favor for all the towing you did!
But, Seriously, did you check the vacuum advance? Did the hose come off or
leak. This sounds like a vacuum problem to me. If it runs with the throttle
open when/where you have lower vacuum, then what NEEDS vacuum? I'm curious what
kind of magical vacuum goodies are hiding in the toybox you have for an engine
bay! Maybe the advance can diaphragm went too? Check that with a mity-vac, or
by mouth to verify. Just put a piece of vacuum hose on the advance can while
someone holds the idle (with the pedal or hands on the linkage at the carb) and
suck the air out of the pipe. If the engine speeds up, good, it MAY be OK.
Then hold your tongue to stop off the vacuum. If the engine slows and the pipe
is not 'stuck' to your tongue, there's your culprit. Substitute Mity-vac for
tongue in the previous statement, if available.
If the IH bug struck in the driveway, it would know that we were
prepared. I'm still remembering three days in a row about 5 years ago, the gold
box would sputter out at the same intersection (5 miles from home) in morning
rush hour traffic. Sure enough three days in a row, I ended up pushing my
scout, alone, through 3 lanes of idiot arizona traffic! Why do people continue
to honk while I'm pushing a truck? Do they actually, genuinely (sp.?) think
that I maybe, just maybe, would push harder if they honk? stupid.
Let us know, Good luck, and thanks again.

Subject: The Commute From Hell!
Well, it was my turn this morning for the commute from hell!
<snip>
Why is it that an engine will never fail right as you pull into your
driveway? Any one have any ideas?
