Nick, Bill,
Just FYI the panels inside should be fiberglass, so be
careful when you bend them. Also the edges can make you itch if
you're not careful. I found out the hard way when I up-n-over'd
my scout 3 yrs ago, the fiber went everywhere. Also if you look
for a pre '78 section for the rear you'll get a switch to turn
the dome light on from the tailgate. Just like if you look for a
pre '78 Tailgate, you'll get the flip down license plate and
light.

Bill,
The Scout II originally had plastic inserts molded to fit inside the
top. They hold up the headliner on the sides and rear. I have some
that I could part with. Let me know if your interestred.

DurangoMan,
Check batt cable connections. Next is try to jump 12v from
the battery with jumper cables directly to the starter while it's
in. Failing that, spend the 45 minutes under the truck, yank the
starter and have the auto store check it on the machine.

OK, here's what I did: I went down to Radio Shack, got some 14
gauge wire and a "momentary on" button. I ran a wire from the + terminal
of the battery to the switch, then to the starter solenoid. I cleaned the
post on the solenoid meticulously, even filing the nuts a bit so there is
a nice, shiny metal contact. No go. Key and button have the same effect:
radio goes off and absolutely nothing else happens. Does this mean that
the problem lies in the solenoid? I have headers and I was told once that
the heat from the headers could be detremental to the solenoid function.
If it is the solenoid, how easy is that to remove and install? How much
should I expect to pay? How can I prevent the same problem from happening
again? Help me make my Scout live again... ;)

Tim,
For gags and giggles a few years back I went to PepBoys when they offered
they had engines for sale. I asked them about a 345 and they said that $1879
for the long block rebuilt, and $800 core charge. I'd check around before you
have this guy do the job. Also the long blocks had some kind of time/mileage
warranty too!

Subject: 304 Rebuild $
I am having my 304 completely rebuilt by a licensed mechanic that I know
pretty well. He has quoted me $2,200 including all parts and labor. Before
he gets too far into it I was wondering if I could get some input from you
guys on this.
Is $2,200 a reasonable price ?
Can I by a short block and have him complete the rebuild for less ?
Does anyone know if / where I can purchase a 304 that has already been
rebuilt ?

Terry,
The DynoMax is not loud at all. It idles really smooth with
that nice low bass tone, and then when you hit it it roars to
life, but from inside the truck with the windows up, there is no
change, except for speed. With the windows down, it sounds so
good, you'll start to cry, guaranteed. Still happens to me after
2 months.

Subject: exhausted
Tom and Joel,
Thanks for the info, I dunno about no "skin friction" (I thought that came
into play in other arenas) but I'll take your word for it, one thing I
should have mentioned, although it shouldn't really matter I don't think,
is the operational altitude, currently "Speedy" lives at 6500 ft and while
probably remain above 4500 for the rest of it's natural life. All I can
think is that that would, if anything, improve the exhaust velocity out of
the tailpipe, yes, no? I know Tom's thought s on his glass packs but how do
you like the Dynoflow muffler Joel, good sound, loud? other suggestions?
thanks

John,
Tom still has his IH right? I'm hoping he still wants my A/C unit in
Tulare. If I haul that thing all the way out there, I want to get rid of it.
Hope we didn't lose another BinderBud.
