Spindle Nut Torque Spec.

Greetings,

Can anyone with a later model Scout II IH shop manual (maybe 1978 and up)
see if a specification is given for (and the proper torquing procedures)
for the type of spindle nut used with the Automatic (or Lock-O-Matic)
locking hub?

The spindle nut used with the Automatic hub is technically called the
"friction shoe" in IH literature. It has a smooth circumference (as
opposed to a hex style nut), has three allen head set screws in its face
and has two additional holes for tightening using a pin face spanner
wrench.

My 76-77 IH shop manual doesn't talk about this type of spindle nut. It
*does* give a torque spec of something like 130 foot pounds (going by
memory) for the regular style hex nut. I've been told that when an
Automatic locking hub is installed (in place of a manual hub), the hex type
spindle nut must first be removed and the friction shoe style nut is
installed in its place.

I can't imagine that the you'd get anywhere near 130 foot pound of torque
with a pin faced spanner wrench before the pins sheared off.

Thanks,

John
