Re: MSD Ignition on a 392

Rich,

As you probably know since you have been considering it, the MSD 5 is an
inductive discharge multi-spark electronic ignition. Because it's an
"inductive" system verses a "capacitive" system as in the MSD 6A, the voltage
of the multiple sparks (after the initial one) decreases. This is still far
and away better than a stock breaker point setup and is a good modification
for your Travelall.

There's nothing special or difficult about installing an MSD system on a
breaker point equipped IH 392. The directions that come with the MSD control
are well documented.

Almost everyone who runs an MSD ignition reports easier starting as the most
noticeable performance gain. Depending on the condition of your current
ignition system, you may also see some fuel economy improvement... but it
probably won't knock your socks off. Idle quality is usually also improved.
You'll find your breaker points last *much* longer, because they act merely as
a low current switch to trigger the MSD control. Point gap and dwell become
less critical and a breaker point condenser isn't even required when using an
MSD control.

Have fun,

John
