Hub woes continue

Ih all,
  Well, the hubs were working right for the first mile, then that old growl
started back in.  When the hubs are set to free and the 4WD selector is at
2WH the front shaft is still turning.  I think the growling might be coming
from the pumpkin instead of the wheel.  One thing I did notice is that when
both hubs are set the same, the "Lock" dots are pointed opposite
directions.  The right hub's "lock" button points directly to the front
button.  The left hub's "lock" button points directly to the rear.  Is this
wrong?  Does it matter?  My shop manual is not much help on this, ANY HELP
